How long does SEO take to work? What to expect month by month

An honest explanation of SEO timelines, what happens each month and how to tell whether the work is on track.

It’s the question we’re asked most before starting an SEO project: “When will I see results?” The honest answer is “it depends” — but that doesn’t help anyone make a decision. So let’s be specific.

What Google says

Google’s own guidance for businesses considering hiring an SEO says that, in most cases, it takes four months to a year to implement improvements and start seeing potential benefit. It’s a wide range because every site starts from a different place.

What makes it faster or slower

  • Your starting point. A site with serious technical problems can improve quickly once they’re fixed. A brand-new site with no history or links needs longer to earn trust.
  • Competition. Ranking an accountancy firm in a small town is not the same as ranking a cosmetic clinic in Madrid.
  • Search intent. Very specific commercial searches (“SEO audit for an online store”) are usually more achievable than generic ones (“marketing agency”).
  • Pace of work. Publishing and improving content every month speeds things up; working in bursts doesn’t.

What happens in each phase

Months 1–2: diagnosis and technical foundations

Technical audit, fixing indexing errors, speed, structure, and Search Console and Analytics set up properly. Also the keyword map: which search each page should win, with no two pages competing for the same one. If there were technical problems, early gains in impressions are common at this stage.

Months 3–6: content and service pages

Improving pages already close to the first page of results — often the quickest wins — and creating new content for commercial-intent searches. Impressions and positions usually start moving visibly.

Months 6–12: authority and consolidation

More useful content, legitimately earned links and mentions, and adjustments based on the data. This is typically when organic traffic starts turning into enquiries on a regular basis.

How to tell it’s working before customers arrive

Customers are the goal, but not the first indicator. In the meantime, watch:

  • Impressions in Search Console: Google is showing you in more searches.
  • Average position of your service pages, not the site as a whole.
  • Number of distinct queries you appear for.
  • Clicks from commercial-intent searches, separated from informational ones.

If none of these has moved after six months of steady work, the strategy needs reviewing.

Red flags when hiring SEO

  • They guarantee the top position on Google within a set time. Nobody can.
  • They don’t explain what they did each month.
  • They promise hundreds of cheap links — a practice against Google’s guidelines that can hurt you.
  • You don’t have access to your own Search Console and Analytics.

If you need results sooner

SEO is an investment that compounds, but it isn’t the only route. Many businesses combine Google Ads to generate enquiries from month one with SEO to reduce that dependency over time.

With our SEO service you get a plain-language report every month: what was done, what moved and what comes next. No impossible promises, and full access to your own data.
