Search visibility

Local SEO in Spain: how to show up on Google Maps when people search nearby

What Google weighs when it shows businesses on the map, what you can improve yourself and the mistakes that cost you visibility.

When someone searches for “physiotherapist in Marbella” or “builders near me”, Google usually shows a map with three businesses first. For many local businesses, being in that block is the difference between a ringing phone and depending on ads.

Local SEO is the work of improving that visibility. There’s no magic and no shortcut — but there’s a lot you can control.

How Google decides which businesses to show

Google’s own documentation explains that local results depend mainly on three factors:

  • Relevance: how well your profile matches the search.
  • Distance: how close you are to the searcher or the area they name.
  • Prominence: how well known and well regarded your business is, online and offline (reviews, links, mentions).

You can’t change distance. The other two you can.

1. A complete, verified Google Business Profile

This is the foundation. Before anything else, check:

  • An accurate primary category. Probably the single most important setting. “Physiotherapy clinic” is not the same as “Medical centre”.
  • Secondary categories and services you genuinely offer.
  • Real opening hours, including public holidays. Wrong hours cause wasted trips and bad reviews.
  • Your own, recent photos of the premises, team and work.
  • A clear description, without stuffing keywords.

If you inherited the profile from someone else or another agency, make sure you are the owner, not just a manager. We see this a lot, and it’s the first thing worth recovering through Business Profile optimisation.

2. Consistent details everywhere

Name, address and phone must be identical on your website, on Google, on social media and in any directory you appear in. Small differences — an old number, a previous address, abbreviations used inconsistently — create doubt about which details are correct.

3. Genuine reviews, requested at the right moment

Reviews affect both visibility and the customer’s decision. The catch is that happy customers rarely write one unless you ask.

  • Ask right after a good service, with a direct link.
  • Reply to all of them, including negative ones, calmly and without the customer’s personal details.
  • Never buy reviews or offer discounts in exchange: it breaks Google’s policies and can lead to reviews being removed or the profile being suspended.

4. A website that backs up your profile

Google cross-checks your profile against your website. A page for each main service, a clearly visible address and service area, and correct structured data all help it understand what you do and where.

If you work in several towns, create area pages only if you have something specific to say about each: projects completed there, travel terms, local particulars. Cloned pages that only swap the town name add no value, and Google treats them as low-quality content.

5. Think in English too

In many parts of Spain — especially on the coast and in the big cities — a significant share of customers search in English. “Dentist Estepona” and “dentista Estepona” are different searches. Presenting your website and services properly in English widens your local reach without opening new premises.

Mistakes that cost you visibility

  • Adding keywords to your business name on Google when they aren’t part of the real name.
  • Registering virtual addresses or offices where you don’t serve customers.
  • Leaving the profile untouched for months: no new photos, no replies, outdated hours.

How long until you see results

Profile fixes can show within a few weeks; sustained improvement depends on local competition and on how steadily reviews and content arrive. Nobody can guarantee you the top spot on the map — but you can expect organised, measurable work: calls, direction requests and website visits from your profile.
